about

This might be the most harrowing song I've ever written if it wasn't for the slight ray of hope, or at least resignation, expressed by the narrator at the end. The friend they're talking to, on the other hand, goes from the rueful black humor that can mark the start of depression to its utter depths within the space of the song. Dunno what happens to them after that but I'd like to think they're okay now.

Not enough songs capture the impotent rage and the narcissism bordering on megalomania that I think of as the primary characteristics of depression. So here's one. You're welcome.

It's all circles and features the last appearance of the flame and the moth from the opening track and Beat My Arms. It also contains the most pretentious reference on the entire album. If you catch it, congratulations: your punishment is catching the reference.

lyrics

The Warp and the Woof

“Goodnight, Irene over my body.”

Roll a note for me
Through your throaty laugh

But you’re having visions now
Of filling an ossuary
Of getting the bones you need
Any way you can

And nobody’s listening
No one’s thinking anything
You’re the only one who’s been
As honest as that

Here is history
And she agrees completely
An angel of Sodom
Face forward to the past

And here’s your finger
Crushing a millipede
Just to prove it happens
Again and again and again

And here’s me standing
Staring at the pavement
Trying to see
The warp and the woof

Ants on the asphalt
Feelers on the bug stain
The pattern rearranging
to absorb the stuff

The flame catching up to him
It always loves making things
And that’ll have to be enough
That’ll have to be enough
