What a banger. Aside from continuing the nautical theme of the album, the song doesn't really have anything to do with it. In particular: it's fun and not at all miserable. Stone cold classic. Probably should be rerecorded at some point. In particular, it would be nice if my "I fell" didn't sound quite so much like the following "I found." That's a really critical turn in the song and it doesn't hit the way it should. The guitar solos are really nice, though. I like the part where the guitar sounds drunk.
Btw, it's not Soul Coughing you're hearing: it's Mike Doughty's early solo records. This song wouldn't exist without 27 Jennifers.
lyrics
Pirate Jenny
When I first met her
I barely knew how to swim
She tied her scarf around my eyes
And she pushed me in
She laughed like a hyena
And she knew how to tease
She smelled like sweat and saltwater
And she danced like a sail in the breeze
And she stole from me
Yes, she stole from many, many
She stole from me
Yes, she stole from many, many
She stole from me
And she stole from many
But I never stole a kiss from
Pirate Jenny
There was talk at the tables
And I wanted to leave
There were things coming out of her mouth
That I just couldn’t believe
She said she had a map
To some kind of treasure
That she would never let me see
And all the boys were asking her questions
Wondering what it could be
And she stole from me
Yeah, she stole from many, many
She stole from me
Yeah, she stole from many, many
She stole from me
Yeah, she stole from many
But I never stole a kiss from
Pirate Jenny
I could tell when she looked hungry
Like she’d never seen meat
Her pack of dogs had to be hanging around
Hoping for something to eat
I heard her shouting in the alleyway
And I beat a retreat
And I would have gotten away from her
If I hadn’t tripped on my feet
And I fell
And I found a lucky penny
And I found a lucky penny
And I found a lucky penny
But I gave it to
Pirate Jenny
