The dog bones from Tourists Film the Earthquake return, now fully connected and looking pretty violent, to wrap up the remaining through line on the album.
You'd probably like this song more if I'd finished recording the harmony tracks instead of leaving the sketch vocals. I'd do it, but the mix you hear is all I have left. This was the last song I recorded and I abandoned the album halfway through recording it.
Mostly doing a Dylan, but here and there I pay subtle, momentary homage to 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. If you blink you'll miss it. Contains another obvious (I think) sonic reference to In the Aeroplane Over the Sea that would bookend the album in a nicely derivative way if it ended here: the sound of an acoustic guitar being put down. Instead it’s a little nod before the reverb comes back to drown you.
Also! Ladies, gentlemen, and enbies: we have a title! Unlike the lyrical through lines that I consciously put in to tie the album together (a couple I've mentioned, a couple I haven't), this lyric was written long before the album was even a gleam in 'ol LG's eye.
lyrics
Pink Bone
Oh, Pink Bone
Last night
I went walking home
Past the cemetary gates
And I saw something inside
White and low
Pulling the bones out of graves
And whittling them
With its teeth
Into shapes to fit the holes
On the back of the beast
And it turned on me
A stolen smile
Made of dead men's bones
Sharpened like jailhouse files
Oh, Pink Bone
So bright
Gave me cancer
Of the eyes
Went down backwards
Went so blind
Thought the sun came up
When I looked into its eyes
And ah, Pink Bone
Oh, the Bone Dog
We went running in the lane
I was leading
He was following
And we were laughing at this game
And he was gaining
But after an hour or so
I got tired
So let me come over
And sit by your fire
I remember the night we met
In the corner of a crowd
You followed and I led
We went walking
Above the streets
And my fingers traced the lines
On the hand you gave to me
You were laughing
And then you were not
And we fell through our holes
Into places we forgot and
We lay low
And we held tight
I thought the wolf would come looking
And just pass us by
So, Pink Bone
Let's get light
And go floating
Up the sky
Leave the houses
And trees behind
Watch the stars burn out
On the left and the right
Till there's nothing up ahead
And in empty space
We'll make our bed
And we will fall
Into the deepest sleep
With our hands clasped tight
And the Bone Dog
Curled at our feet
