One thing I like to do with lyrics is to write a couple of lines with kind of cliched or banal imagery and then do a ninety degree turn into something strange and arresting. This song doesn't do that. Instead, the arrestingness of the imagery slowly ramps up and up and up as things get worse and worse and worse.
It's the most harrowing song I've ever written, and maybe one of the most harrowing anyone's ever written. But the lyrics don't necessarily stand up on their own. Consume them as sung. If you don't find the song disturbing...then...good.
One of two songs on the album I had an old friend professionally mix and master before I abandoned the album (Tourists Film the Earthquake is the other). Sounds great. A real banger. I'd make this the featured track if it wasn't so dark and if Pirate Jenny didn't exist.
There are oblique lyrical references to Holland, 1945 and In the Lake of the Woods.
lyrics
Pictures From an Only Daughter's Wedding
Edelweiss
We’re going home
So lock the gates
And sing along
Oh, when the peacekeepers come
They’ll take our side
And the world will know
What it means to hide
All the things
That you have seen
I think you take
After me
But when the cord is cut
The world will be fine
We’ll show them that time
Can still run backwards
Oh my love
They’ll come for me
I made mistakes
I couldn’t see so
Clear as the day we met
You were so, so light
With golden hair
And sky-blue eyes
And I was a handsome lad
Oh, how time flies
The pictures fade
And the colors dry
And I boil water in the dark
And I close their eyes
And I dream of pinning
Butterflies
And sometimes the hands run back
And the calendar lies
And I hear you laughing
In the iron skies
I hang a cloth from the mirror
To let us hide
Soundless, safe
From the world outside
Edelweiss
Sung to sleep
We cower in
The fields like sheep
But, oh, when the war is done
And the world is bright
I’ll take you out
And we’ll dance all night
And I know that I’ll get the joke
And I’ll ache with smiles
And forget the dust
That’s left inside
